Many large customers are relying on their 1-800 network routing systems to be their primary contact with their customers. These large, complex systems can be difficult to design, more difficult to implement, and very difficult to be kept fully maintained and operational.

Couple that complexity with the massively churning telephone area code changes, splits, and overlays, not to mention the 2-3000 exchange additions EACH MONTH to existing Area Codes.

The large networks that feel the effects of the above the most are those who try to route by zip code(s) to Area Codes/Exchange combinations (NPA/Nxx) routing and those who plan their routing using zip code and/or Area code / Exchange proximity calculations (send all calls from within 50 miles of 612-469 or 55044 to this branch on the tree).

In most cases, the original plan is processed, usually very laboriously, and translated to a complete network plan acceptable to the Carrier's network support software. The original plan, and designer's intent, is not even available within the Carrier's network hardware or software.

During 1999, the scope of the problem really surfaced as we had 18 area codes overlaying area codes, 17 area codes split from other area codes, and 25,000-30,000 exchanges affected by additions, deletions, and splits. Over the course of the year, changes occurred most every business day.

Timely implementation of area code / exchange /and zip code modifications and reallignments are critical to the network meeting the Customer's expectations. Many customers depend on the Carrier to keep these critical changes up to date. Unfortunately, in many cases, this is not even possible, as many have already sacrificed any chance of the maintenance being possible by the Carrier because of the loss of design objectives during the upload process. Customers who have questions of how current is their network and the status of recent changes should check with Bud Jay for some recent changes, and some directed testing suggestions.

Our sister Company, JK Data Services, has the solution for those needing improvements. JKDS network planning software allows the customer to maintain the network identity and detail design, while providing the capability to extract the necessary input for the Carrier's network maintenance requirements.

JKDS's solution can interface to your planning files, and, currently, can generate files compatible with AT&T advanced networks and MCI networks. Other networks and carriers are possible with minor modifications.

JCS, and JKDS would be most happy to discuss our solutions with you. Call Bud Jay at 952-469-5898 or 866-527-6266 (toll-free) to discuss possiblities.
